Alumna Commissioned as U.S. Navy Chaplain

Thandiwe Chiwaya was commissioned as a U.S. Navy chaplain on Saturday, Dec. 6, during a service at Oakwood University, an affirmation of her call to ministry and a milestone nearly 30 years in the making.

She began studies at the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary at Andrews University in 2011, moving through the program part-time while navigating military transitions. When she finished in 2018, Adventist Chaplaincy Ministries endorsed her, and the Navy accepted her as an active-duty chaplain.
